THE IRON AGE
When was the Iron Age?
While
the neighbouring countries were still using bronze, Hittite artisans had
discovered how to make iron spears and other weapons. They realized that
iron tools and weapons were stronger and sharper than those made of
bronze. The Hittites kept the secret of iron working until the fall of
their empire, about 1200 BC. Within the next 200 years, however, the
knowledge of ironworking spread throughout the Middle East. The Bronze
Age thus gave way to the Iron Age which continues to the present day.
